Staying Ahead of the Game: Preparing for College During the Summer

Before
entering college, summers typically consisted of relaxing with friends, time by
the pool, and maybe a part-time job.  But
now, summers are different.   For one, you're leaving in two months, moving
out on your own, changing your life forever.  So, summer is really time to start preparing
for this change. 101 Grads has a great list of everything
you should do to get ready and here are a few of our favorites!

·
Make a list:
You should list out exactly what you need to bring, what you need to leave
home, and what you need to buy for your dorm room. Include all personal hygiene
products, school supplies, books, etc. Take it from someone who over-packs every
year-- make a list, it's necessary!

·
Apply for
scholarships: It's never too late to apply so just do it! It can't hurt.

·
Open a checking/savings
account:  Open up an account at a bank on
or near campus.  This will help you avoid
pesky ATM fees if your current bank isn't local.  Two dollars here and there for ATM charges
add up quickly.

·
Talk to your
roommate: Check out my previous
post
on how to break the ice and build a relationship with your roomie.

·
Start saving
money:  Enough said.

·
Make sure
you go to your orientation:  Orientation
is a great way to learn what's going on at your new school. Also, check their
website and your student portal a few times a week. They will post announcements
there, as well.

We
all know that leaving for college is exciting, and a bit surreal, but there if
you stay organized you'll be good to go!
